I’m Frankie Kington. Alongside the wellbeing coaching, I also do coaching and mentoring in Manchester, UK, mostly for people who already know roughly where they’re headed but can’t quite get moving, or who’ve hit some kind of ceiling they can’t put their finger on. It’s a different crowd to the burnout stuff. Less “I’m running on empty,” more “I’m fine, actually, just stuck.” Different problem, so it gets its own page rather than getting lumped in with everything else. Discover how a personal development coach can help you unlock your potential and achieve your goals.
What’s the Difference Between Coaching and Mentoring?
People use these words interchangeably, and to be fair, a lot of Manchester businesses blur them together too. There is a difference though, even if it’s a bit fuzzy at the edges.
Coaching, in Practice
Coaching is mostly me asking questions and getting out of the way while you work out your own answer. According to the International Coaching Federation, coaching is a partnership that helps clients maximize their own potential through their own thinking, rather than being handed someone else’s playbook.
That’s roughly how I approach it too. I’m not running you through a script I’ve used on ten other people. It’s more about helping you think straighter about whatever’s actually going on, whether that’s a career call, a leadership thing, or just some old pattern of self-doubt that won’t quit.
Mentoring, in Practice
Mentoring’s a bit more hands-on. Less “what do you reckon the answer is” and more me telling you what’s worked before, what hasn’t, and where the shortcuts are that you probably don’t know about yet.
EMCC Global, one of the main professional bodies in this space, describes mentoring as a learning relationship built on sharing skills, knowledge, and experience between mentor and mentee. Doesn’t mean you have to take the advice. You can still go your own way. There’s just more of my opinion in the room.
Most sessions end up being a bit of both anyway. I’ll lean whichever way actually helps rather than sticking to one label out of principle. The leaders of tomorrow are built today. Learn the key leadership skills that help young professionals thrive in today’s competitive workplace.

Who Coaching and Mentoring in Manchester Is Actually For?
This isn’t for people in crisis, and it’s not for people who are just drifting either. It tends to suit:
- Â Â People stepping into a management role for the first time and quietly panicking about it
- Â Â Founders and small business owners who don’t have anyone above them to bounce ideas off
- Â Â Professionals who’ve plateaued and can feel it, even if they can’t explain why
- Â Â People weighing up a career change but stuck on the “what if I get it wrong” bit
- Â Â Anyone who wants a sounding board that isn’t their partner, their mate, or their manager
A lot of Manchester’s economy runs on ambitious people in tech, finance, and creative industries who are good at their jobs but have never actually been taught how to lead, negotiate, or make a big call with confidence. That gap is where most of this work happens.
How a Coaching and Mentoring Relationship Actually Works?
There’s no single script here, because the whole point is that it bends to fit you. But most relationships follow a rough shape.
- We start with where you are and where you’re trying to get to, which sounds obvious but takes longer to pin down than people expect.
- We agree what “useful” would actually look like: not vague hopes, but something you could point to in three months and say yes, that happened.
- Sessions run every one to two weeks, usually forty-five minutes to an hour, and cover whatever’s live for you at that point.
- Between sessions, there’s usually something to try, reflect on, or push through, so the work doesn’t just live inside the room.
- We check in on progress properly every few months, not just assume it’s working because nobody’s complained.
Some people want six sessions to get through a specific decision. Others stick around for a year or more because having a regular space to think clearly turns out to be worth more than they expected. Coaching and Mentoring vs Therapy
Worth being upfront about this, since people sometimes aren’t sure which kind of support they need. (If you’re weighing this up against wellbeing coaching specifically, I’ve written about that comparison separately, as it’s a slightly different question.)

What to Expect From the First Conversation for Mentoring
The first call is mostly me listening and asking questions, working out what you’re actually trying to solve versus what you think you’re supposed to say you’re trying to solve. Those aren’t always the same thing, and that’s fine.
By the end, we’ll have a decent sense of whether this is coaching, mentoring, a bit of both, or something else entirely. There’s no pressure to commit to anything on that first call.
FAQ’s About Coaching and Mentoring in Manchester
1. How much does coaching and mentoring in Manchester cost?
It depends on what you need and how often you want to meet. I go through pricing properly on the first call once I understand what you’re after, rather than quoting a number before I know what fits.
2. Do I need to know exactly what I want before I start coaching and mentoring?
No. Plenty of clients turn up with a vague sense that something needs to change without being able to name it precisely. Working that out is often the first bit of the process, not a prerequisite for starting it.
3. Does coaching and mentoring in Manchester work for teams as well as individuals?
Mostly individuals, though I do work with small business owners on things that affect their whole team, like how they delegate or communicate under pressure. If you’re after group or team coaching specifically, mention that on the first call.
4. How is a coaching and mentoring relationship different from a workplace mentor?
A workplace mentor usually has their own agenda tied up in the business, however well-meaning they are. This is a space that’s entirely about you, with someone who isn’t your manager, your investor, or your colleague, and has no stake in the outcome beyond you actually getting somewhere.
5. How long does coaching and mentoring in Manchester usually take?
Some people come for a handful of sessions to work through one specific decision. Others keep a regular slot going for a year or more because it’s useful to have somewhere to think out loud. Both are normal.
